How To Enter Items

PumpkinsThe following is a listing of articles at the Blue Hill Fair for which may be exhibited. Included are appropriate times, number and any special instructions for preparation of items for exhibit.

Also included are premiums paid for winning items.

Items may be entered at the Exhibition Hall during the following hours:

  • Wednesday: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Thursday: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Friday: 8 a.m. to noon

Exhibits must remain until the last day of the Fair, at 6 p.m. Any exhibit leaving before that time forfeits premium. Permission may be obtained from the head of the department in special cases. Items are to be removed from the Exhibition Hall after 6 p.m. on Labor Day, or on Tuesday before noon.

VEGETABLES
Class 11

Prepared free of dirt, preferably brushed or wiped clean, not washed, tops removed. Vegetables should be uniform in size. Provide the exact name for each variety, and please make sure you are bringing the correct number required for each vegetable. Please bring a list of names. The top three prize money winners in classes 11, 12, 13, and 14, excluding the Largest Pumpkin or Squash Contest will be awarded free passes to next year’s Blue Hill Fair.

The Largest Pumpkin or Squash Contest
(Rules and Regulations)

  1. Open to all Residents of the State of Maine.
  2. Pumpkin/Squash shall be grown in the State of Maine.
  3. Pumpkin/Squash must be grown and cared for by the exhibitor.
  4. Each exhibitor may enter only one pumpkin /squash per year.
  5. All entries must remain on exhibit for the duration of the fair, until 6:00 P.M. on Labor Day
  6. Specimens must be healthy and undamaged.
  7. Winner will be the biggest pumpkin/squash by natural weight.
  8. Pumpkins/Squash will be judged together for this contest.

(Entries weighing below 100 lbs will not qualify)
1st- $150.00; 2nd-100.00; 3rd-$75.00


The Largest Summer Squash Contest
  1. Winner will be the largest Summer Squash by Weight.

Prizes: 1st-$25.00; 2nd-$15.00


We will accept any other vegetable not listed here.
Judging for vegetables and fruits will begin on Friday at 1:00 p.m.

COOKING CONTESTS
Class 15

BLUE HILL FAIR
WILD BLUEBERRY PIE
BAKING CONTEST

All Pies entered must meet State of Maine pie contest regulations. These include: Use only Blueberries for fruit, pies must be two crusted and must be accompanied by the complete recipe printed on a recipe card. Recipe should include a complete list of ingredients and instructions for both filling and crust. Do not put a name on the recipe card. Recipes are not available to the public. Please bring pies in a container you do not want returned.

Pies will be accepted until 12 noon on Saturday, with judging at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. After the contest, pies will be sold with monies dedicated to the maintenance of the Exhibition Hall. Pies may be purchased for a $6 fee.

Prizes: 1st - $100; 2nd- $60; 3rd-$40. This contest is sponsored by the Wild Blueberry Association.

Please bring pies in a container you do not want returned.

Pies and Muffins become property of the Blue Hill Fair and will be sold after the contests.

BLUE HILL FAIR
WILD BLUEBERRY MUFFIN
BAKING CONTEST

Each entrant will enter three blueberry muffins on Saturday morning or earlier, with the judging on Saturday afternoon.

Prizes: 1st- $50, 2nd- $30, 3rd- $20

GRANGE EXHIBITS
Class 16

Open to any Grange. Display to include a variety of products raised or made by members of each organization. Each display will be placed in a 4’x6’ area, with the Grange providing stands and backgrounds for display.

Prizes: 1st-$175; 2nd-$150; 3rd-$125; 4th-$115; 5th-$100

Each Grange not placing in the first 5 places will receive a gratuity of $75.

Judging for the Granges will begin on Friday at 1 p.m.

The winning Grange will receive the Williams Cup for the following year.

Entries will be taken from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday and on Friday 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Judging will take place on Friday at 10 a.m.

The Blue Hill Fair will afford the best possible care, however, it will not be responsible for any entries missing or damaged at the end of the Fair. Any flowers or plants not picked up by Fair’s end will be disposed of unless other arrangements are made.

QUALITY is important! The Blue Hill Fair reserves the right to reject any plants due to lack of space or inferior quality.

The Decision of the judges will be final.

The Blue Hill Fair reserves the right to display plants wherever most convenient. Plants may be displayed in hanging pots. Judging on all plants will be on the plant itself, not the container. Bottles provided, please do not bring jars or bottles to be saved for pick-up.

The NEIL A. RAYMOND MEMORIAL CUP will be awarded for the best flowering house plant. $25 will accompany the cup; 2nd place $15. A Blue Ribbon and $25 will be awarded to the best foliage house plant; 2nd place $15.

SEASONAL HANGING BASKET OR POT
Any annual flowering or foliage plant used in an outdoor setting for the summer season only. Will not be eligible for the Neil A. Raymond Memorial cup. Same rules apply except for the one-year possession.

Coastal Maine Farming

1. Blueberry Luncheon
Stage a luncheon table for two that includes a centerpiece appropriate to title. Should measure no more than 24" square.

2. Winter in Maine
A festive arrangement highlighted by native plants for a holiday centerpiece. 24" x 24" table space.

3. Garden Scarecrow-For Kids Only
Assemble a scarecrow using Maine-inspired materials with at least 1 live element. Please keep to a height no more than 6' and 3 feet of floor space

 

GARDEN CLUBS 2011
"At Home in Maine"
Displays should showcase native Maine species as well as hardy species blended together. Show relation of plants to the sea and the forest.

Entries will be judged on: Best Representation of Theme; Use of Space Provided; Variety & Quality of plant material.

Plant list and Club name are to be posted with display. Reservations to be place by August 20, 2010

EXHIBITORS NOTE
DAYS TO ENTER EXHIBITS WILL BE TUESDAY, AUGUST 30, 9AM TO 9PM AND WEDNESDAY AUGUST 31, 9AM TO 9PM ONLY

All articles must be new and assembled for display or hanging; any not neatly prepared will be automatically disqualified. Articles are to be entered in the name of the person who made them. Number of items to be entered may be limited.

All items must be new. Items being entered must have been completed within the last Blue Hill Fair calendar year. (Sept. 2, 2010-Aug. 30, 2011).

Quality is important: even if an article is the only one in its class, it may not receive a prize. Tie and snip threads, finish off seams, clean & press neatly, and put hangers on hangings.

Any articles not clean and properly prepared will be disqualified.

Any entry, not previously awarded a premium, made by a person age 80 or over, will receive a prize equal to a first in the category entered.

ENTRY DAYS & HOURS
Please Read Carefully!!!!!! Entries will be taken on Tuesday & Wednesday August 30 and August 31 ONLY!!!!! This is to enable judging to take place prior to opening of Fair.

Articles may be entered in Arts & Crafts during the following times:
Tuesday: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Wednesday: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Judging will take place on Thursday at 10 a.m.

Crafters will be demonstrating their various crafts during the fair. Traditional, new and unique crafts will be demonstrated and featured as space allows.

All items must remain in the Arts and Crafts building until 6 p.m. on Labor Day.
Exhibitors must present slips to pick up items.

The Arts & Crafts Building will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. the day after Labor Day so exhibitors may pick up their articles.

BEEF RECIPE COOKOFF

Anyone may enter. All entries must contain beef as one the ingredients. Bring your favorite prepared beef recipe to the Livestock Show Ring by 7:30 PM on Friday. A list of ingredients must accompany the dish, and a complete recipe must be submitted at the time of the contest. Two judges will sample each entry and will determine the “Best.” If they can not agree, a third judge will sample both of their favorites and determine the winner. A $50 cash prize will be awarded to the winner. The winner may submit the recipe to be published in next year’s fair book.

NO BAKE OFF: NO-BAKE COOKIE CONTEST

Any type of cookie or bar is welcome, in the no-bake style. Three age Divisions:

Children Under 12 years
Young Adults 12-17
Adults 18 & Over

First Prize Each Division $100.00
Second Prize Each Division $50.00
Third Prize Each Division $25.00

Rules:

  1. Cookies will be judged on taste, ease of preparation and creativeness. Judges will be selected by the Blue Hill Fair and their decisions will be final.
  2. Entries will be received at the Flower Building from 9 AM to 10:30 AM on Monday, September 6th, with judging to begin at 11 AM.
  3. Contestants may have only ONE Recipe submission with one Dozen cookies being required for entry.
  4. Cookies or bars must be made from scratch with no more than 10 ingredients. No commercial or bakery cookies will be accepted.
  5. Cookies or bars must be accompanied with complete recipe, ingredients and procedures. Please include the following information: Name, Age, Address, Phone Number(s), Name of cookie or bar, recipe ingredients (10 or less) and procedure. (Or Use Form Next Page)
  6. It will not be the responsibility of the Fair to return any dishes or containers. Cookies and Bars will become property of the Blue Hill Fair.

Judging Criteria: Taste 40%; Ease of Preparation 20%; Presentation 20%; Creativeness 20%
