The Blue Hill Fair is a true "Down to Earth" Country Fair. Always scheduled around Labor Day weekend the fair boasts of some of the finest entertainment, attractions, and exhibits. Situated in the small coastal town of Blue Hill, Maine, at 233 Ellsworth Road, the Fair draws thousands from all over the state to enjoy a fun-filled weekend.
Among the many attractions featured at the fair is a large livestock area, full of the usual farm animals, as well as the llamas and alpacas on display. A short distance from the livestock area, one may take in the powerful Draft Horse and Oxen Pulling. On Saturday and Monday the Blue Hill Fair features demonstration Harness Racing. On Saturday and Sunday the immensely popular Sheep Dog Trials are a featured part of the day's program. Under the direction of Jim and May Davidson, the interest in this event has reflected the abounding enthusiasm that the Davidson's display as they enter their 56th consecutive year as Superintendents of this Blue Hill Fair Tradition.
On display in the two large exhibition halls are a wide range of locally-grown vegetables, fruits and flowers, as well as local Grange exhibits, a wonderful Arts and Crafts department, with another exhibit hall dedicated to 4-H and extension displays.
Entertainment is always a big part of Blue Hill Fair. Performers such as 38 Special, Lorrie Morgan, Charlie Daniels, Diamond Rio, and Faith Hill have all performed on the Blue Hill Fair Stage. This year Blue Hill Fair is excited to break from tradition and bring something never before seen in Blue Hill. KSR Motorsports will bring its Night of Destruction Monster Truck and Stunt Show to the Blue Hill Fair on Labor Day. Opening the Fair’s Midway Stage offerings on Thursday evening, will be none other than local favorites "The Juke Rockets." Friday night will feature the very popular Antique Tractor Pulling, and Saturday offers include two performances of the Tim Dyson FMX Motorcycle Stunt Team. Sunday evening, long-time Blue Hill Fair favorite Rick Charette and the Bubble Gum Band provide an evening of family entertainment, followed by a Mammoth Fireworks Display.
The Blue Hill Fair features a full carnival and midway. Blue Hill Fair is unique in the number of local groups that participate with all sorts of great food and games, and Smokey's Greater Shows provides all kinds of mechanical thrills. Two special attractions, Hot Dog Pig Racing and the Great Maine LumberJack Show are featured "Fun for the Family" entertainment. Hot Dog Pig Racing gives us a look at Nascar, Blue Hill style, while the Great Maine LumberJack Show will demonstrate nearly forgotten lumberjack skills including axe throwing, speed chopping, crosscut sawing, and even log rolling. Returning this year will be the acrobatic performances of the Disc-Connected K9's a professional touring team comprised of some of the best Frisbee Dogs on the Planet. Also back this year will be a second entertainment stage featuring such acts as the comedic improbabilities of Brent McCoy and his new show, "The Secret Circus," the popular River Bottom Funk and performances by “OC & Sarah”, ”The Nevah Band”, “Desperado”, “Willy Kelly with Café Daze”, “The Cowboy Angels”, “The Bad Daddy’s”, and “Full Drive Band” all scheduled for the “Midway Stage,” while the band “Mainely Country” provides a unique performance in the barn-like atmosphere of the Livestock Show Ring on Saturday evening.
The Blue Hill Fair offers opportunities for those wishing to exhibit their skills in a number of contests.
Included are Cooking Competitions for Beef, Blueberry Pies, Blueberry Muffins and No Bake Cookies. The Blueberry Pie Eating Contest is a traditional fair event and the Ladies Skillet Toss, remains one of the Fair's more Popular Events. The Blue Hill Fair is proud to continue the “Blue Hill Fair Idol” on its Contest Menu. Patterned after the hugely popular “American Idol,” this event consists of three segments; the Auditions on Thursday Evening, Semifinals on Saturday, with the Finals prior to the “Monster Truck Show” On Labor Day afternoon. Blue Hill Fair is also pleased to be a host site for the Child Identification Program (CHIP). This is a free service offered by the Freemasons of Maine with help from other organizations in the Masonic family. At Blue Hill Fair, members of Ira Berry Lodge #128 and Nichols Day Camp will work with law enforcement officials and dental professionals to provide fingerprinting, tooth printing and videotaping services designed to create a personal record to identify the child in case of emergency. This service will be available Saturday and Sunday, September 1st and 2nd.
The Blue Hill Fair is located at 233 Ellsworth Road in Blue Hill, Maine. Admission prices are as follows: Thursday August 30: Three Dollar Thursday, $3.00 Adults, Children under 12 are free. Friday August 31: Five Dollar Friday & Senior Citizens Day $5.00 Adults. Seniors 62 & over $3.00, Children under 12 are free. Saturday, Sunday, Monday (September 1,2,3): $8.00 Adults, Children under 12 are free. There is no charge for parking on the Grounds. All stage shows are free with price of admission.
